In the expansive bushveld of Limpopo, South Africa, I spent my childhood on a simple farm nestled in the Waterberg mountains, oblivious to the challenges and changes the world was destined to face.
It all began with my grandfather, Wilhelm Schack Sr, an intrepid photographer hailing from the Frankfurt Zoologische Gesellschaft in Germany. Driven by an insatiable curiosity and a burning desire to uncover the truth, he embarked on an audacious mission to find the elusive white rhinos, believed to have vanished from the face of the Earth. With unwavering determination coursing through his veins, he embarked on a courageous odyssey, venturing across vast and untamed landscapes, from the plains of Angola to the rugged terrain of Namibia, and finally to the boundless expanse of South Africa.

Undeterred by the challenges that lay before him, my grandfather immersed himself in the vibrant landscapes of African cultures, connecting with local tribes and immersing himself in their rich traditions. Along his arduous journey, he found not only a fervent pursuit of the rhinoceros but also an invaluable opportunity to learn from the indigenous communities he encountered. In their midst, he gained profound insights into their ancestral wisdom, their intimate relationship with the land, and their unwavering commitment to coexist with the remarkable creatures that called it home.
As he traversed these diverse lands, he marvelled at the awe-inspiring landscapes and encountered a myriad of other wildlife. Yet, the elusive white rhinos remained out of sight, their presence still shrouded in mystery. Despite repeated disappointments and the absence of his sought-after subjects, my grandfather’s thirst for knowledge and his passion for conservation grew stronger with each passing day.
Undeterred by setbacks, he continued his intrepid exploration, relentlessly documenting the intricate beauty of the African wilderness and nurturing relationships with local communities. Through their shared stories and intimate glimpses into their way of life, my grandfather forged deep bonds rooted in mutual respect and admiration. He realized that the protection of the rhinoceros was intrinsically intertwined with the preservation of their cultural heritage and the delicate balance of the ecosystems they inhabited.
While the elusive white rhinos remained beyond his grasp, my grandfather’s journey became a symphony of discovery, embracing the diversity of the human spirit and the value of cultural preservation. He became a living testament to the transformative power of exploration, fostering connections that transcended borders and bridged the gap between disparate worlds.
Nevertheless, destiny had a different path laid out for him. As the tumultuous waves of the Second World War swept across the globe, my grandfather found himself seeking solace amidst the expansive Namib desert. However, fortune did not favour him, for he was apprehended and sentenced to endure six harrowing years within the confines of a German concentration camp on South African soil.
Within those bleak confines, a remarkable camaraderie blossomed among the captives, transcending the bounds of adversity. In clandestine fashion, they imparted invaluable knowledge, sharing trades, crafts, and teachings that enriched their lives and served as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. This clandestine exchange ignited a profound understanding of the significance of community and the power of connections, inspiring each other to seek education in vital life skills and the art of survival.
Emerging from the darkness of a cruel captivity, my grandfather’s spirit remained unbroken. With an undying resolve, he resumed his quest to find the rhinos he had sought for so long. Eventually, his unwavering dedication bore fruit and the white rhino was found in Zululand, Natal, South Africa. After his discovery he became the official photographer of the iconic Kruger National Park where, in time, he married a South African woman and together had three sons.
Tragically, my grandfather’s time with his family was cut short when he passed away while my father, the eldest of his sons, was just a young boy of six. Despite the brevity of their time together, the legacy my grandfather left behind was profound. His passion for conserving wildlife and nature had imprinted itself deeply upon my father’s heart. His passion was also transcribed, as he wrote a memorable book called “Ich jagte das weise Nashorn mit Kamera und Blitzlicht”, which translates to “I hunted the white rhinoceros with a camera and flash.“
Driven by his deep admiration for his father’s extraordinary adventures, my father, Dr. Wilhelm Schack Jr, embarked on a resolute quest to follow in his footsteps, immersing himself in a lifelong pursuit to safeguard the vulnerable and defend the purpose his father believed in. Fuelled by an unwavering passion for wildlife, he forged a remarkable commitment to protect one of the most majestic and endangered creatures on Earth—the rhinoceros.
As he traversed the African continent, my father’s tireless endeavours took him to the forefront of conservation efforts, where he poured his heart and soul into the protection and preservation of these magnificent beings. He became a steadfast guardian of rhinos, fighting relentlessly to secure their habitats, shield their dwindling populations, and halt the relentless threat posed by poaching.
Undeterred by the daunting challenges he encountered, he fearlessly plunged into the battle against rhino poaching, dedicating countless hours to devising innovative strategies and implementing rigorous anti-poaching measures. In collaboration with fellow conservationists, he engages local communities, conducting extensive research and education to unravel the intricate complexities of rhino conservation.
With unwavering compassion and determination, he sought not only to save individual rhinos from the brink of extinction but also to ignite a collective consciousness for their preservation.
His pursuit transcends mere conservation—it embodies an enduring love for the natural world and an unyielding commitment to protect those who cannot protect themselves. His unrelenting dedication to the cause of rhino conservation serves as an inspiration to all who cross his path. Through his remarkable efforts, he kindles hope, forging a path towards a future where these majestic creatures, amongst all else, roam freely, their existence secured, and their legacy preserved for generations to come. My father taught me the transformative power of unwavering determination, instilling within people around him a shared responsibility to protect and cherish the irreplaceable treasures of our planet.
As the youngest daughter of this lineage, I was privileged enough to accompany my father on many of his expeditions. Those experiences ignited a passion for conservation in me. The connection I felt with animals and nature became the driving force in my life, a constant reminder of our collective responsibility to protect our planet’s most precious resources.
As I navigated the traditional pathways of life, it became evident that the everyday routine failed to fulfil me. Searching for something more, I pursued my post-graduate studies in Criminology, focusing on the serious field of Environmental Crimes. I sought to understand and combat the injustices perpetrated against our environment every day.
In search of a deeper connection with nature, I embarked on a transformative journey to the Maldives. There, amidst the vibrant coral reefs and the breath-taking marine life, I found solace in a new part of nature I had not yet experienced so deeply. Becoming a snorkelling and scuba diving instructor, I devoted myself to the protection of marine animals and spreading awareness of the preservation of the ocean’s delicate balance.
It was during my time in the Maldives that I witnessed a lack of resources supporting conservation efforts and volunteering initiatives. If we were to change the world and safeguard its treasures, we needed to wake up and shift our mindsets and work together in a way not seen before.
Thus, the vision for GAAAP was born — an inclusive community that unites passionate individuals from all walks of life, empowering them to contribute to the conservation movement. Together, we can challenge the destructive norms and strive for a world where nature’s wonders thrive and flourish.
